- PARALLAX
-
- The apparent displacement of the position of a celestial object when viewed from widely different positions. Parallax is
- measured in arc seconds. With the value of the parallax the distances of heavenly bodies can be measured.
- Stellar parallax is observed at a six month's interval from opposite sides of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, and the
- baseline for diurnal parallax (which can be used only in measuring distances in the solar system) is the Earth's radius.
-
- The Sun's and the Moon's parallaxes were first measured by Nicolas Lacaille in the mid 18th century. Friedrich Bessel
- was the first to determine the parallax of a fixed star (61 Cygni).
